The impact of sense of community and concern for health on community participation in health promotion in a medium-sized Korean city

Abstract

|
|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the association of the existing sense of community and community concerns about health and health determinants with community participation in a medium-sized city in Korea.
Methods: We analyzed our 2017 survey data, “Citizen Opinions for Healthy City Ansan”. The survey was based on responses to a self-reported questionnaire which was collected by using non-probability judgment sampling methods from 929 community participants, including residents and civil servants over the age of nineteen in 25 administrative communities of Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-province in Korea. We measured the existing “Sense of Community” and “Community concerns about health and health determinants” by using 5-point Likert scales.
“Community participation” was evaluated on participants’ experience in the previous year in five community actions or activities, and we examined the association of sense of community and community concerns about health and health determinants with community participation by using logistic regression analysis.
Results: This study has shown that sense of community and community concerns about health and health determinants were associated with, and made positive impacts on, community participation in community activities or actions.
Conclusion: We can effectively facilitate community participation for promoting community health by efforts heightening sense of community and by increasing community awareness of issues of health and health determinants
